The Sport
What is SPRINT CANOE/KAYAKING?
Flatwater/Sprint Canoe and Kayaking takes place on lakes and calm rivers:
-
It is a competitive and Olympic sport;
-
Boats are narrow and fast (and kinda tippy);
-
Race distances are 200m, 500m, 1000m, 6km;
-
Boats can be singles (K1 or C1), doubles (K2 or C2), fours (K4 or C4) or War Canoe (15 paddlers);(K= kayak, C = Canoe);
-
Kayaks have a rudder that controls steering;
-
Canoers paddle on one knee and only on one side;
-
Paddlers do not need to "roll". If one flips the boat, one simply falls out!
About Us
The Yorkton Canoe and Kayak Club(YCKC) is a non-profit organization dedicated to introducing and developing the sport of Flatwater/Sprint Canoe and Kayak in Yorkton and District.
For over 30 years, YCKC has offered programs for all ages! YCKC is known for hosting its annual Yorkton Developmental Regatta, which draws in athletes from around the province to compete in a challenging yet fun filled environment. YCKC athletes have made Yorkton proud by representing their club at local, provincial, and national regattas, always competing with sportsmanship, dedication, and excellence.
Though mainly a Sprint Club, YCKC also offers Learn-to-Paddle, Recreational, Group, and Rental programs that focus on paddling safety, healthy and active lifestyle, and having fun! In 2014, YCKC started a Dragon Boat program as well as Paddle-All (partnership with Sask Abilities).
YCKC is a member of Canoe Kayak Saskatchewan (CKS) and Canoe Kayak Canada (CKC).
YCKC's coaches and Executive are committed to creating a positive, challenging, and fun environment for everyone. All Executive and Coaches are Respect in Sport certified. We are open to new ideas on how to improve our club and its service to the community! Email and/or call us. We look forward to seeing you on the water!
